WhizFolders Alpha/Beta Release Notes

(the latest list of fixes or improvements since the first 6.2 alpha release)

Attention: This document contains release notes for all the fixes and new features. Instead, you may want to look at the highlight of the new features on 6.3 features page.

Improvements and fixes in Deluxe/Pro Beta version 6.3:

  • Please see the highlights of new features on the 6.3 features page.

  • New, Tabbed document opening option: A switch "Tabbed" on the main window opens subsequent documents in tabs on the main window. Additionally, a convenient arrow on the right shows a drop down list of the tabs.

  • New, Search within links: When doing the operation Search--Find Text, if the text that you want to find is in the hidden part of the Jump link statements, you need to use the last new option "also search within link targets."

  • New, Audit database: WhizFolders now includes an advanced Audit Database that keeps track of any changes you make to the topics. For example, if you accidentally changed or deleted a topic, you can look into this database and recover lost information. The database can be opened by using the menu "Edit--Recover Information from Changed Notes archive."

Important point about this Changed Notes archive: If you accidentally lost some information, it is best to look into the above database during the same WhizFolders session. Don't Exit the program. To keep the database size within limits, WhizFolders cleans it from time to time when it exits. You might even get data from earlier sessions but don't depend on it and try to recover as soon as possible, in the same session.

  • New, template hierarchy can be inserted: The templates feature in the Deluxe edition has been improved. If you are on the topic list when you Use a template and the template topic has children underneath, they are also inserted in the topic list. But the special text tags can only be processed in the top parent topic. Please don't put special text tags in the child topics.

  • New, Indented rtf export and printing: Exporting RTF to a single file now allows indenting the topics according to the levels in the outline. This is only supported when you select complete outlines. Similarly, when you print multiple topics, you can use a new indent option in "Printing Multiple Topics" general options.

  • New, sorting on the nth word in topic name: When you do advanced sorting, in the final dialog that shows the results, it is now possible to sort on the Nth word on this dialog. For this, please look at "Sorted on Word Position" number, change it as needed and click on Sort again.

  • New, View topics by modified date: You can now view the topics by their modified date and time by using the menu "View--View topics by modified date." For old WhizFolder documents, you may not see the date/time data till you modify them.

  • New, Make a Word List by double-clicking words: This is an extension of Watch Clipboard feature. Suppose you quickly want to make a word list from certain words in the pasted text. You can switch on the option "Double-click word in quick editor" that you will find on the Tools menu, next to Watch Clipboard.

It works like this. You switch on Watch Clipboard and also the above option. Then you just need to double-click a word in the quick editor of the same document and that word would be added as a topic name to the top of the topic list where you are running the Watch Clipboard.

  • New, Auto Compacting and improved compact: Previously, the empty space in WhizFolders file caused a prompt every time when opening the file. Now the prompt occurs when closing the file, and you can switch that prompt off and choose to always do a compact or always avoid it. The corresponding options are in General Options--Confirmations and "Auto Compact" option in General Miscellaneous options 2. In addition, if you have set up a backup folder, a backup is automatically performed before doing a compacting operation.

  • New, Save and Restore print settings: Now you can save and restore your print settings so that it becomes easier to have a certain set of printing options when working on a set of WhizFolder documents.

  • Disable printing by commenting: In case you don't know, now WhizFolders ignores comment topics when you do a print all or print selected topics and these topics are selected. To make this easier, now we give a menu operation on the Edit menu that allows you to select a bunch of topics and disable them for printing by making them Comment topics. Note that you can still print these topics one by one by selecting and printing.

  • Fix, highlights in the table are retained: When editing a table, the highlight colors in the table were sometimes lost. This is now fixed.

Improvements and fixes in Deluxe/Pro Alpha version 6.2.6 (July 22, 2009):

  • Fix, spelling-checker on portable drive: The new feature announced in 6.2.2 earlier to include the spelling-checker on portable drive worked fine except for one condition--when you didn't use the spelling-checker even once, the above operation did not find it and didn't ask you to include it. Now it detects this condition and asks you to set up the spelling-checker first.

  • Major new feature, wrapped topic titles: A new option on Tools--File Options--Appearance allows you to switch on wrapping of long topic names on multiple lines. This will be of help to those who want very big topic names for some reason.

  • New feature, first letter capitalize: Click on Tools--General Options--Auto Replace and switch on the option "Auto capitalize first word." This works in the editor where as soon as you hit the space character after the first word, it is automatically capitalized.

  • Improved, Select All behavior in the topic list: The select all operation on the topic list did not select child topics which were collapsed under their parent. This was counter intuitive. Now a select all will select even the collapsed topics.

  • Improved, operations on selected topics: The export and print type operations that work on selected topics now detect if the children of some topics are not selected and confirm if the children are to be included in the selection. If you are used to the old no children auto-select behavior, you can switch this confirm off for the session on the same question box. Note that this prompt does not come up for any of the "copy" operations on the edit menu because that may be irritating.

  • Major improvement, portable WhizFolders: On Windows Vista, the settings could not be stored on the portable drive due to some permission issues unless portable WhizFolders was run as administrator. As a result, the settings for portable WhizFolders were stored in the host computer itself. We have now altered the design so that this is possible. You will see that portable WhizFolders is now able to remember the settings on the portable drive in Vista. So if you were forced to run portable WhizFolders as administrator you can now remove that restriction. If you get permission error messages as a result, either delete the setting and list related files that give error or if you find it too complicated, recopy the portable WhizFolders to a fresh folder on the portable drive so that it is able to use the new settings scheme.

  • Improvement, backup folder on portable drive: For portable WhizFolders, if you set up the backup folder on the portable drive, WhizFolders is now able to manage it well even if the drive letter changes. So you will see the documents backed up properly even if the drive letter changes for the portable drive.

  • Improvement, backup folder: Earlier, WhizFolders treated backup folder in a special way in that files opened from it were not added to the main document list. It also gave warnings if you used the same folder to keep the documents and backup documents. This restriction is now removed.

  • Deluxe improvement, hoisting: The hoisted topic name is now shown at the top of the list.

  • EWhizBook new: We have also updated the EWhizBook module with some fixes. Your exe e-books made with it will be larger now but they will not cause any false positive warnings from some virus check engines.

  • Fixes, hidden topics related: Fixed many operations that included hidden topics (Deluxe edition) when they shouldn't include them. For example, print all, print list, export list, etc.

  • Fix, typing to start quick edit: If you typed a key over the viewer to start the editor, it didn't get typed properly after the editor started. This is fixed.

  • Fix, word count: Word count does not stop the quick editor if only one topic is selected. This helps you get the word count from the topic being edited. However, if you select more than one topic, quick editor is turned off as soon as you ask for word count. This is to protect your edited data from loss because word count must go through several topics. If you want this to always work in the editor, please use the advanced editor instead of the quick editor and use word count in its own menu.

  • Fix, Link to relative folder: The link to open a relative folder didn't work when the option to open links in explorer is switched on in the general miscellaneous options. Fixed.

  • Fix, strange list painting: Sometimes when document was opened after an all collapsed state, it had height and painting problems. Fixed.

Improvements and fixes in Deluxe Alpha version 6.2.4 (April 21, 2009):

  • Deluxe New Feature, keywords for a topic displayed below its text: Now you will see a tab "Keywords for above topic" below the right pane. Click on it and it will expand to show the keywords for the topic shown above. You can click on the Pin on its left so that the pane does not close when you move from topic to topic. Some useful items are also available on the right-click menu of the keywords list.

  • Deluxe New Feature, hoisting completely revamped: Hoisting can now be done for any level. A major change is that when you select a topic and hoist, it hoists its child topics only. This makes it clean and simple and works same at all levels. Also, some operations on seleted topics will work differently or shouldn't be allowed when the selected topic is hidden due to hoisting. All these operations are now fixed and give a correct message. WARNING: If you hoist a document using the new version, please unhoist with that only. If you unhoist with the old version, it won't work correctly and you will find the hoisted topics at the end of the list.

  • Deluxe Improvement, View Outline: If you have a very long title, it is no longer truncated and now appears properly wrapped in the View Outline screen.

  • Improvement, level pull down: Now the level pull down below the topic list keeps showing the last set level till you expand or collapse any item in the list.

Improvements and fixes in version 6.2.3:
(this is the latest alpha release)

  • Improvement, What's New button: The bottom of the main window now shows a What's Newbutton that points to the new features web page.

Improvements and fixes in Deluxe Alpha version 6.2.2:

  • Improvement, How to put the spelling checker on portable drive: Now, there is an option to also install the spelling checker and thesaurus on the portable drive ("Tools--Copy to portable drive" operation on the Main Window of WhizFolders). Actually, WhizFolders asks whether you want to include the spelling checker when you go to perform the above operation.

  • Improvement, How to disable a topic from printing when you print all or selected topics: Just make it a comment topic--start the name with "~~". The only way to print such a topic is by printing it alone from the topic list or from the editor. Note that hyperlink topics also start with ~~ but they are not comment topics. Comment topics don't have a regular icon, just a big dash in place of it.

  • Improvement, How to disable the "Keep beginning text with topic title" feature when printing: When printing multiple topics, WhizFolders uses a smart feature to "keep the title and the beginning text of a topic" on the same page. So if it thinks, a topic title with very little text will look odd at the end of a page, it skips the page and puts the title on the next page with the text. You can now switch off this feature at the bottom of the Printing Options page for multiple topic printing. There is a check box that you can switch on to disable this feature.

  • Improvement, procedure recovery of corrupted files in certain recoverable cases: WhizFolders now has improved recovery code for files corrupted with a special error. In case of such an error, it displays a particular procedure to follow to recover the topic list and any of the topics within it for which a recovery is possible by copying to another file.

  • Deluxe Feature Fix, hidden topics now excluded in Select All: When some topics were hidden (view menu) and a "select all" was done for any operation, they were included in the operation, for example, when printing or exporting the selected topics. They were also included in a print all operation. This is fixed.

  • Fix, improved behavior on task bar icon click: When all documents were minized and the main window was hidden, clicking on task bar icon didn't work to restore them. This is now much improved.

Improvements and fixes in Deluxe Alpha version 6.2:

  • Improvement, fixing the registry for picture insertion: WhizFolders now tries to detect the picture insertion problem and offers to fix the registry. The problem is originally described in the Blog article:
    http://whizfolders.com/blog/index.php/2006/07/04/insert-picture-shows-icon/

  • Deluxe Feature Improvement, display topics for ALL selected keywords or none: Now there is a checkbox at the bottom of the keywords pane to consider ALL of the selected keywords when displaying or processing the topics assigned to them. So it will display only those topics that contain ALL of the selected keywords. If the checkbox is off, it works as before, displaying topics for "ANY" of the selected keywords.

  • Improvement, Justify paragraph option now available in the editor: In the Advanced Editor, you will see it on the Format Paragraph menu. You won't see it in the editor toolbar of both quick edit and advanced editor unless you do a "Reset Toolbars" on the document window and advanced editor window. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO RESET TOOLBAR because you have customized it, please use the Customize Toolbar option to find this new button and add it to the editor toolbar yourself.

  • Deluxe Feature Fix, View menu items now available for customization: View menu items were not visible for Toolbar Customization as well as in List of Keys for keyboard shortcut setting. This is now Fixed.
